Asset Coding & Taxonomy

The quality of your maintenance data is determined by the quality of your technical hierarchy. If assets are not correctly identified, located, and classified, nothing downstream โ€” CMMS, planning, KPIs โ€” works properly.

Why taxonomy matters

A poorly structured asset register is one of the most common reasons CMMS implementations fail to deliver value. When assets are duplicated, misclassified, or placed in the wrong functional location, work order history becomes untraceable and KPIs become meaningless.

We design technical hierarchies that are logical, scalable, and aligned to your operating model โ€” from installation level down to maintainable item, with tag numbers that make sense to the people using them in the field.

What we design

Functional Location Structure
Top-down hierarchy from plant to system to functional location. Designed for maintenance management โ€” not P&ID numbering.
Equipment Master Design
Equipment categories, classes, and types aligned to ISO 14224 taxonomy. Enables cross-asset reporting and benchmark comparison.
Tag Number System
Logical, human-readable tag numbers using SFI, Tverrfaglig Merkesystem, or client-specific coding. Consistently applied across disciplines.
Lifecycle State Design
Asset lifecycle states from procurement through commissioning, operation, and decommissioning โ€” mapped to your approval workflow.
Discipline Mapping
Mechanical, electrical, instrument, and civil assets correctly assigned and coded by discipline for work order routing and cost allocation.
Spare Part Linkage
Bill of materials linked to functional locations and equipment. Spare part categories (operational, capital/insurance) assigned by consequence class.
